What is the maximum pH electrode cable length before a pre-amplifier is needed?

The maximum pH cable length is debatable. While they seldom exceed 50 feet due to noise and the effect of signal attenuation some manufacturers offer cables of up to 100 feet in length. While these may work under ideal conditions for lengths much more then 40 to 50 feet it is advisable to have a pH pre-amplifier to boost the high impedance pH signal.
